Know your Poker Hands: If you want to play poker, learning hand ranks is a must. Poker hands are categorized in a set order. The standard poker hand consists of five cards to which all four suits have equal value. The player with the highest category of hand wins.
There are different forms of modern poker that use the same hand ranking. First, we begin with the Pair, a hand consisting of two cards of a matching rank and three unmatched side cards. In the event of a tie, the one with the highest pair wins. For instance, a pair of Queen’s beats a pair of 8’s [QQ > 88]. If both hands have the same pair, the highest side card determines the winning hand. Ultimately, Two Pairs (a hand consisting of two sets of pair and one side card) beats a pair, and three of a kind beats both hands, [K-K-5-5-4 > 10-10-9-9-8]. A Three of a kind hand is composed of three cards with the same rank and two side cards, [5-5-5-3-2 > 4-4-4-K-5 > 4-4-4-Q-8]. The same rules apply in case of a tie.
The next category of a hand is higher than those three mentioned which is known as a Straight. A straight hand consists of five consecutive cards of different suits. An example is a hand composed of the sequence three, four, five, six, and seven with different suits. It is important to note that aces can fall as either a high or low card in a sequence. [3-4-5-6-7]
An even better hand is a Flush, a hand of five cards of the same suit but not in sequence. If there is a tie, the player with the highest ranked cards wins since suits are all considered equal. However, getting a full house can beat a flush. [K-Q-9-8-2 > K-J-8-6-2]. Full House consists of three cards of the same rank along with a pair. For example, three 10’s and a pair of 8’s. The value of the three matching cards determines the winning hand. [9-9-9-2-2 > 8-8-8-Q-Q]
When you have a Four of a Kind, you beat a full house. This combination, sometimes called “quads”, consists of four cards of the same rank and a side card known as the kicker which could be any card. If players have the same four cards, the winner is decided on the fifth card or kicker. [J-J-J-J-4]. However, a quad is no match for the powerful Straight Flush- a straight five card all of the same suit.
The highest type of a straight flush, which is given an own ranking, is known as the Royal Flush. A Royal Flush consists of Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and ten of the same suit. This is the most striking hand one can ever get in poker. [A-K-Q-J-10]
If, in any case, players do not have the hand categories mentioned above, the hand with the highest card wins. This is known as the High Card which is the lowest category of hand in. These are the hand ranks one should know in order to make the best out of Poker. [A-J-6-3-2 > A-10-9-8-7].
