PCAStyle. We answer the million dollar question: why do poker players wear shades indoors and get away with it? We’ve compiled the ways players hide the windows to their souls with the most savvy shades available, and the reasons why they love the sunglasses like a ray of sunshine.
The Glance Concealer
Why it’s crucial: Peeking at the chips, at the board, and at the players on your table is a sure sign of your nerves. This is one of the classic tells that’s hard to miss, so if you’re the type whose eyes roam around when you get a bum hand, then better put on those shades. An added perk: it also hides your bloodshot eyes from all the online poker you’ve been playing non-stop, you maniac.
The Grinder’s Reprieve
Why it’s crucial: Experienced poker players can attest to this, especially the ones who play live poker tournaments: patience is a virtue in this game, and resting your eyes whenever you can go a long way in preserving your grit in grinding. Steal a catnap every now and then, and you’ll feel refreshed enough to make better calls while avoiding the bad caused by exhaustion and eye strain.
The Fish Hunter
Why it’s crucial: This one is usually for fast-paced tourneys, or the beloved cash game — spotting, tracking, and targeting fish players. Of course, you’ll have a more difficult time trapping prey when they know they’re being hunted, so having something to conceal your peepers would come in handy whenever you scope the room for potential game (pun intended).
The Double-Edge Bluff
Why it’s crucial: Speaking of hunting, for our last but definitely not the least reason, we have the complicated intimidation tactic that doubles as a shade that hides the shade under your eyes. Why? To avoid being mistaken as a fish, of course. Other players can sense weakness from a mile away, and nothing screams weak more than heavy eyelids. Unless, of course, you can spin that on its head and use it to your advantage — now THAT would be something for the naked eye to see.
