Poker is considered to be the most popular card game in the world, involving a staggering amount of money and famous players coming from around the globe. Be that as it may, the origin of the word “Poker” is still uncertain and has been a debatable topic among gaming historians. Here are some of the generally accepted theories based on the similar card games that have been traced back in time.

It was believed that poker originated from the 16th century Persian game “As Nas” which features similar Poker hands. This game was played with five players and 25 cards containing five suits with rules similar to that of Five Card Stud. Others speculated that the idea of poker started in China around 900 AD with their domino cards. Without a definite answer to how poker got its name, one theory is that it came from the name of the French card game called Poque. Poque’s resemblance to Poker, with its betting and bluffing, has made majority of historians to regard this as the leading point of Poker’s existence. In fact, the two games have been played on the same location – New Orleans, where poker seems to first spread and come forth in the early 19th century. The French are known to be ardent card players back then and this card game is the first to use the figures of Spades, Hearts, Clubs, and Diamonds. Also, it appears to have been played in variations by soldiers during the Civil War, the period when several versions of Poker emerged.

Another possible etymology of the word “Poker” is the German card game “Pochspiel”. It was derived from the German word “Pochen”, the same word where the French “poque” based its name. “Pochen” means “to brag or bluff” and its literal translation is “to knock”; one could view it as “knock-play” (which is evidently done by poker players during a game). In a number of ways, Pochspiel has similarities to today’s poker such as bluffing and passing. It is said that knocking on the table represents the passing and some players at the time signify it by saying words like “Ich poche” or “Ich poch”.

The word source for Poker could be traced back to different periods coming in all forms and versions of different card games that resemble poker. Historians have recognized all of these as significant precursors to the modern poker.
